Overview

The formative objectives of the Master's Degree (MDs) in Psychology are those provided for under DD.MM. dated 16 March 2007 for Master's Degrees in Psychology, class LM-51. The basic aim is to train professional psychologists in dynamic, clinic and community psychology, understood as methods of psychological intervention in respect of individuals, groups, organizations and communities.

The Master's Degree aims at developing theoretical knowledge, technical skills and methodological competencies pertaining to the construction and management of the relationship between the psychologist, his/her patients and principals for purposes of promoting research, evaluation, development and treatment goals.

The final exam of the degree program, intended to assess the technical-scientific and professional preparation of the student, consists of the completion and discussion of a written dissertation.

Learning Objectives

Graduates should have sound theoretical knowledge in the fields of dynamic psychology, clinical psychology, community psychology, developmental psychology and educational psychology.

Graduates should have good comprehension of the following:

  • Main clinical and psychodynamic models relating to intrapsychic processes, to interpersonal relationship, to the psychopathology onset, to group and institution dynamics, focusing on the models of the clinical relationship with people, couples, families, groups and institutions;
  • Ecological models of wellbeing and power as well as of the qualitative methods of research-intervention;
  • Processes for the constitution of subjectivity, the processes for self- and identity construction, the moral and historical meaning of the concept of intersubjectivity;
  • Diagnostic models for personality evaluation, which are useful for purposes of formulating treatment indications.

In addition, graduates should have specific basic competencies in fields such as psychiatry and/or child neuropsychiatry, moral philosophy and/or pedagogy with a focus on adult education, and/or historical science with a focus on the history of gender.

Outcomes and Professional Profile

After passing the specific state examination, graduates in psychology can register to section A of the Psychologists Association and perform the corresponding professional activities. In addition, graduates in psychology can carry out high – responsibility functions within organizations that provide direct services and assistance to individuals, groups and communities, being an integral part of the psychological- medical team in mental health and family assistance services and teams operating in hospitals, schools and social institutions that promote the protection of children, mental health, groups and communities. Graduates can also carry out specialized activities of assessment, orientation and prevention; they can work as consultants within private or public entities and as expert trainers in psychology and psychodynamics that pertain to other professional areas, in particular social professional categories related to education and assistance. Graduates in psychology can exercise intellectual and specialized professions in the Social Sciences sector, with particular reference to psychological sciences, such as psychologists or clinical psychologists. They can access a Phd, specialization schools and second-level Master's Degree programs.
